Poetry Basics

A poem is a "composition in verse"
Poems paint pictures by means of poetic devices such as figurative language, rhyme and rhythm. Poets use their words to convey a message, spark interest, or tell a story. One of the most important parts of poetry is analysis.

Analysis is done through;
theme, diction, tone, form, imagery, rhythm, rhyme and metre.

In simple terms, the message of your poem is your theme. The way you make your poem look is the form, and can often convey emotions if done correctly. The choice of words to create atmosphere is your diction, and tone is the attitude on the subject the poem is on. Imagery is the description, using figurative  or literal language to influence readers ideals and thoughts. Rhythm sets the pace, so when read aloud readers can feel the changes of pace and the mood set.

Rhyme is also fairly simple - it depends on the sound, not the way the words look.
Rhyme forms are determined by AABB/ABAB/ABBA processes. Each letter is a form of rhyme.
If the first rhyme is "okay" then it is A. If the second rhyme word is "leave" it is B.

Using this example, lets try an AABB poem line.
"I am okay, I say" this is the A.
Now "But I believe I must leave," is B. The rest of the poem is the same process.

Metre is the number of stresses and beats in a line.
It is the syllables in each line that must be repeated in order to make the poem flow well. For example of the first line is "I am okay, I say," the syllable count is 6. So the next line must repeat, or have another pattern to repeat.

There are many type of poems (all of  which I will touch on eventually)  such as Ballads, Sonnets ,  Odes, Monologues and more. Narrative poems like Ballads, tell a story. Lyrical poems convey thoughts and have musical qualities to them, like a Sonnet.

A poem is an extension of your thoughts, your ideas and desires. They can be the most powerful thing ever created, or the saddest. They need not be long, nor extensive. To be a poet is to be both abstract and creative at the same time.

To end this intro to my Guide to Poetry, here is a poem with a few things we learned.

Beethoven's Silence
____

The soft sway of the keys
The reverberate
Contemporary bliss

Sounds like chimes from God
Eyes closed to feel it
To breathe it in
The taste of music and its scent

The last and final note
Like the fading rain
A heart reaching out
Please, play it once more
